Summer hosting season is almost here! One of our biggest requests when designing a new kitchen is ensuring it functions for our clients’ families and guests. From functional floor plans to wet bars, there are many things to consider when remodeling your kitchen. Keep reading to learn our guide on creating the ultimate entertaining space.

Layout + Flow
The layout and flow of your kitchen are critical for creating a guest-friendly environment. These are the backbones of your home, and it’s essential to consider the optimal functionality of the space from the start.
- Open Concept: An open floor plan promotes socialization and allows your guests to mingle and move freely between the kitchen, dining room, and living room without being separated from the rest of the party. It also allows the cook to converse with their guests without being isolated in a separate room.
- Functional Zones: When designing your kitchen, make sure to consider building clear zones. Creating distinct prepping, cooking, and cleaning zones will optimize your home’s flow and efficiency.
- Counter Seating: The kitchen island or peninsula is everyone’s favorite kitchen gathering spot. This feature is a focal point for guests, providing a place to display appetizers and snacks and additional seating if needed.

Appliances + Storage
The kitchen is the workhorse of any party, and it’s essential to ensure you have the proper tools for seamless preparation.
- Upgraded Appliances: Consider adding new appliances best suited for large gatherings, such as a large fridge, multiple stovetops, or a double oven. These upgrades will help ease food preparation and lessen the stress of hosting.
- Amble Storage: To maximize space and keep the kitchen organized, plan to add pull-out shelves, built-in cabinets, pantries, and other storage solutions for your cookware, dinnerware, and utensils. A specific hosting cupboard where you can keep all your serving dishes, table linens, and decor will make your life much easier at your next party. We also love incorporating an appliance garage to hide tools like toasters and blenders from guests and give you more open counter space.
- Beverage Station: One of our favorite zones to consider when planning your kitchen with hosting in mind is the beverage station. Pick a space to add a secondary sink, a beverage fridge for wine and mixers, and shelves for glass storage, and you’ll have all you need for the ultimate wet bar, which will streamline drink preparation and leave you free to converse with guests.

Ambiance + Design
The mood of any party goes beyond practical floor plans and having the right tools. You’ll want to create a space that appeals to all senses and appears warm and inviting.
- Lighting: Lighting is one of the most essential features to set the mood. Using a mix of task, ambient, and accent lighting will create an inviting atmosphere. Also, consider adding dimmable lights and under-cabinet lighting to add ambiance to the space.
- Accent Features: Adding color and texture to your home design will help wow your guests and make the space feel like a place everyone wants to hang out. Consider an out-of-the-box backsplash, bold pendant lights, or colorful cabinets to make the space look unique.
- Home Automation: While it may not be the first thing you consider when planning a soirée, sound plays a crucial role in creating the perfect party atmosphere. Consider adding a built-in sound system to easily play background music, or incorporate hidden in-wall or -ceiling speakers. The audio can be controlled and automated from a command center, allowing hosts to enjoy the party with their guests without worrying about the next song disrupting the vibe.
