Moody Design Details for Fall
As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, there’s nothing quite like transforming your home into a warm, inviting retreat for the fall season. This time of year is all about creating cozy moments, embracing natural beauty, and making small, thoughtful changes that bring comfort and style into everyday living. From flickering candles and layered lighting to autumn-inspired colors, nature accents, and a perfectly stocked coffee station, these simple touches can instantly shift your home’s atmosphere and help you fully savor the season. Keep reading to learn our Senior Designer, Tyler’s, favorite tips on how to transform your home this season and beyond!
Bring Out The Candles
The flickering light of a candle creates an instant ambiance, even in spaces with sufficient lighting. Add to that the warmth, decorative containers, the sound of a burning wood wick, and comforting scents, and you’ll feel transported to a new space. My recommendation for scents would be to keep it simple, recognizable and natural – the appeal of a sweetened pumpkin-spiced snickerdoodle scent can get sickening quick.

Lower The Lights
While we are talking light, now may be a great time to get your light bulb temperatures consistent throughout your various spaces. It is a very simple investment to swap out a couple of bulbs and can go a long way in both setting the mood, and for overall health. I like to say – more temp for more tasks, so places like offices/studies should have the coolest white (5000k), warm white (3000k) in living rooms & bedrooms, and neutral white (4000k) in bathrooms & kitchens. Also, if you are exploring any sort of renovation, consider the minimal investment for any built-in lighting to be on dimmers.
Let Nature Be Your Decor
Wildflower or other “found nature” bouquets can create such cool accents. Even something as simple as an interesting tree limb is a great idea for the fall, and is more sustainable than the bouquets and fresh fruit we tend to put out in the summer. The fall is the best time to go on a nature walk with the goal of finding little collections or various colors to mix into your home. This is a great chance for children to get involved too, getting outside on engaging scavenger hunts.

			Create A Splash
There is a reason leaf-peeping is so popular, and it is because nature produces its most stunning colors this time of year. If you have an accent wall in a dining room, or a small powder room needing a refresh, just a little paint can go a long way. Autumn colors like saffron, russet, auburn, olive and plum can provide that moody richness, and if you’re matching something in nature, it is hard to go wrong.
Organize Your Caffeine
The fall is a great time to put effort into a coffee/tea station in your home so that you and your inevitable guests have quick access to a warm drink of choice. Whether you have a standalone console, a wet bar, or just a space on your counter, this is your sign to invest in some stylish drink accessories (may I suggest copper for this time of year), replace your coffee or tea packaging with a decorative vessel, and organize some fun flavor add-ins. Go ahead and have that second cup.

			Embrace The Cozy
Pull out the throw blankets and let them adorn any surface available. Nothing says comfort and colder weather like a blanket at the foot of the bed, across the back of a chair, or draped on a sofa. They can add a great deal of visual texture and look good both folded nicely or casually thrown. This is also a great opportunity to get eclectic with a mix of colors and patterns that otherwise might feel out of place. As a personal note, I love to leave the windows open a little later into the day to cool everything down and make the blanket use that much nicer.
Whether you make one small change or embrace them all, these ideas are simple ways to capture the spirit of autumn and enjoy it every day, right from the comfort of your own home.
