How to Create The Ultimate Guest Room Experience
The holidays are right around the corner, which means hosting season is almost here. There’s nothing quite like having the whole family together for the holidays: sipping morning coffee at the kitchen counter, cozy meals in the dining room, and all gathered together at the end of the night by a roaring fire. The lead-up to all these special moments can, however, be stressful, especially if your guests are staying in your home. If you’re looking to craft the ultimate guest room experience, you’ve come to the right place. Keep reading to discover our top tips for creating a guest room that feels like a home away from home.
Private Bathroom
If you’re remodeling your home or building something new, consider adding an en-suite bathroom to your guest room. When staying in someone else’s home, there’s nothing like having privacy. This not only gives your guests their own space to unpack their toiletry items, but also allows you to enjoy your primary bathroom without having to wait for the shower. Be sure to include fresh towels, a basket of essential toiletries (such as shampoo, conditioner, and a toothbrush), a hairdryer, and small touches like Q-tips or makeup remover to make their stay more comfortable.

Ample Storage
Another important consideration during your home remodel is having ample storage space. Built-in shelves are an aesthetically pleasing and practical way to provide your guests with space to hold their clothes and personal items. Plus, you can also use them to store linens, towels, and extra blankets. If a home remodel is not in the cards, consider purchasing a nice dresser and making sure the closet has extra hangers. Having a luggage rack or bench for their suitcase is also a nice touch!
Calming Color Palette
Color is another visual sense you’ll want to appeal to. This can be done using paint, furniture, or bedspreads. The goal is to create a peaceful space that makes your guests feel at home. Light blue is great for creating a refreshing and calm space, while earth tones, such as browns, greens, terracotta, or caramel, can help create a serene and cozy environment. You can also never go wrong with warm whites for a comfy and inviting atmosphere.

Layered Lighting
As with any room, lighting is crucial for setting the mood. Create a layered lighting scheme with a bright overhead light and bedside lamps featuring low-wattage bulbs or dimmers for reading or ambient lighting. A small, motion-sensored night light can also be helpful, both in the bedroom and bathroom.
Creature Comforts
The goal of a guest room is to create a home away from home. Invest in a quality mattress and layer the bed with breathable sheets, a light quilt, and a heavier duvet or extra blankets, allowing guests to adjust their temperature as needed. Install window coverings, such as blinds or blackout drapes, to allow guests to control the amount of natural light and ensure privacy for a restful night’s sleep. If space allows, a comfortable armchair or bench can provide a quiet spot for guests to relax or put on their shoes, giving them a sense of “ownership” of the room.

Thoughtful Touches
While the big-ticket items, such as a comfortable bed and private bathroom, are important, what really makes a guestroom exceptional are the extra thoughtful touches. Consider adding a cute sign sharing your wifi information and a sound machine or fan to help them enjoy a peaceful night’s sleep. A water carafe with glasses is also a nice touch, so they don’t need to venture to the kitchen in the middle of the night. Add a snack or sweet treat for bonus points!
Designing the perfect guest bedroom involves a blend of hotel-inspired luxury and thoughtful, personal touches that anticipate your visitors’ needs. The goal is to create a serene, comfortable, and functional space that will make your guests feel instantly at home, not just for this holiday season, but for years to come.
