ADDITION
There’s nothing like a grand old Italianate-style house; however, despite their architectural beauty, sometimes their functionality does not work in today’s modern world. Our clients craved a new entry space where they could store shoes, jackets, and bags to keep the rest of their home clean and free of clutter. Instead of walking directly into their kitchen, they opted to build a 215 sq. ft. mudroom addition, designed as a modern extension to their historic home.

Built circa 1857, the original owner was jewelry maker and merchant James B. Fairbanks. By 1871, this was the home of Robert Couch, a prominent Newburyport resident who served as mayor in 1870 and 1881 and as Representative to the General Court in 1872. The house remained in the Couch family until 1912.

ART DECO INSPIRED
The vision for this modern addition to a historic Italianate-style home was to subtly incorporate the glitz and glam of the 1920s. Art Deco’s aesthetic is a beautiful blend of the contemporary and vintage design trends that make a space look luxurious and dramatic. With its geometric patterns, glamorous fixtures, and gold accents, Art Deco style places itself in the roaring 1920s, despite its timeless appeal. From statement pieces like the ceiling light fixture to more modest accents like the doorknob, we loved bringing this design style to life.
