BASEMENT RETREAT

As new residents of Newburyport, our clients found the perfect home with this early 2000s Greek Revival reproduction. The main floors were precisely what they were looking for; however, the finished basement was lacking character. To truly make the space their own, we created an elevated, speakeasy-inspired basement featuring a full bar, built-in shelving for their comprehensive whiskey collection, and a painted coffered ceiling. The final effect was a moody, intimate space perfect for hosting friends and family or having a cozy night in.

The centerpiece of the basement is a custom two-tier bar, designed to accommodate seating in one area and serving in another. To complete the overall vision, we installed custom cabinetry along the wall to store our clients’ whiskey collection. We highlighted this storage by adding an antique mirror backing to lengthen and deepen the space, making it appear as though there are twice the number of bottles. Behind the bar, a wood veneer wall covering was installed to tie in the blue hues and brass fixtures throughout the space.

For a basement remodel with limited access to natural light and low ceiling heights, lighting in the below-grade space was a crucial element of the design. Instead of relying on numerous direct overhead lights, we opted to use accent lighting to create a more moody atmosphere, achieved by adding uplighting to the soffit, under-counter lighting at the bar, and accent lights in the whiskey cabinet shelves.

The overall goal for this project was to create a speakeasy-inspired hangout. The speakeasy design style is characterized by an exclusive and intimate atmosphere, achieved through the use of hidden entrances, dim lighting, and luxurious, old-world craftsmanship. Rich textures, such as velvet and leather, along with dark and opulent color palettes and Art Deco-inspired details, are often featured. This style emphasizes quality through intricate woodwork and custom cabinetry, showcasing exceptional attention to detail.
