REMODEL
Built in the mid-1700s, this historic Amesbury home had great bones, but the kitchen, which was moved to an addition built 100 years after the main house was built, had severe structural problems. In addition to the structural issues, the original kitchen was outdated and lacked space for our clients’ cooking needs. Latady Design brought our team on to execute his vision for a new space that was more functional and better matched the client’s aesthetic. Not only did we correct the structural issues, but we were also able to modernize the kitchen and adjacent rooms while respecting the home’s historic character.

MODERNIZED + EXPANDED KITCHEN
To give our clients more room to prep, cook, and enjoy, we relocated the first-floor adjoining bathroom and expanded the kitchen, providing an abundance of storage options, more countertop space, and room for new, high-end appliances. We also removed the large fireplace in the kitchen and an underutilized staircase, allowing for additional cabinetry and a wet bar. The room’s centerpiece is the 106 sq. ft. island painted Newburyport Blue with a built-in bookshelf on the end and a matte-finished quartzite countertop.
STRUCTURALLY SOUND
While our clients loved the historic character of their home, it had sadly not aged well. During the demo, our team discovered the structure was compromised. The biggest challenge was designing a plan to support the second floor while maintaining the maximum ceiling height and minding historic touches. Working hand in hand with Latady Design and structural engineers, we installed two hand-hewn beams from a barn in Maine and channeled the inside to cover structural steel ceiling members. The steel provided support, while the beams were a decorative trim to the kitchen design.
BLENDING THE OLD WITH THE NEW
As a historic home built in 1762, our clients wanted to maintain the home’s character while modernizing their spaces. The finished look of the ceiling beams emulates a period-appropriate eatery, paired with the benefits of modern structures and support. The floors were finished with heartwood pine, a common choice for early American dwellings, to match the floors throughout the home. Then, to finish the space, we used paint colors from Benjamin Moore’s Historical Collection—inside and out.
