Get to Know Olivia: The Latest Addition to Our Design Team

This Women’s History Month, we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Heim, our Architectural Drafter + Design Associate and the newest addition to our team! Olivia joined BLB in the fall of 2025 and instantly fit right in. Not only is she incredibly passionate about home design and improving our clients’ daily lives, but her engaging personality and positive attitude make working with her a delight.

Olivia graduated from Penn State University with a degree in Architecture, where she developed a strong interest in residential design. She has since worked on high-end residential projects throughout New England, gaining experience across multiple design phases. We’re excited to have Olivia on the team as she continues to grow while pursuing her architectural license. Keep reading to learn a little more about our newest designer!

What drew you to architectural design?

When I was little, I always said I wanted to be a fashion designer like my grandfather. I loved the idea of creating something beautiful from nothing, but sewing and I just never got along. Even so, the desire to design never really left me.

I was always drawing as a kid, and started taking art classes at a young age. I truly knew I wanted to be an architect when I found myself playing The Sims FreePlay and Minecraft just to build houses. I would spend hours designing layouts, caring more about the space’s structure and feel than the actual game.

While I never had a standout subject in school, the one thing I was always sure of was my creativity. I was a total music kid; I played the clarinet in my school band from elementary school through high school. I loved curating the perfect outfit every day for school, and more than anything, I loved drawing. Creativity was woven into everything I did, whether through music, fashion, or the sketches filling my notebooks. Architecture felt like the place where all those parts of me could exist together, a way to turn my imagination into something real.

What does a “day in the life” look like for you?

A typical day in the life for me? You can usually find me at my computer, headphones on, deep into design work, doing my best to stay focused while soaking up the collaborative, lively energy of our team at BLB.

Every morning starts the same way: a hot cup of coffee. Without caffeine, I’m basically a zombie. I’ll take a little time to catch up on client emails, wrap up anything left from the day before, and map out a “plan of attack” for the day. In theory, it’s organized and efficient. In reality, one unexpected email or curveball can completely reroute your day, and just like that, your perfectly written to-do list is out the window.

Throughout the week, I’m usually prepping for client meetings or jumping into them, and every now and then I get to tag along for a site visit. Being on site is one of my favorite parts of the job. There’s something about seeing everything in progress, the details, the problem-solving, and the collaboration that makes you a better designer. We’re constantly learning, and that knowledge not only sharpens us as designers but also supports our team in the field.

And then, at the end of the day, I head home to my two beautiful children… my cats. The perfect way to wind down after any day!

If you could design your perfect home, what would it look like? What features are must-haves for you?

This is such a tough question for me because my eye for design is constantly evolving. There’s a saying that an architect should never design their own home, and I get it. We’d probably redesign it every year.

But if I could? It would be a huge mixed bag in the best way. I’m drawn to layered colors, a little bit of pattern clashing, detailed millwork, vintage touches, and tons of natural light. I love spaces that feel collected over time rather than perfectly curated. I appreciate a home that feels lived in, where textures have depth, materials have character, and nothing feels too precious to actually use.

It would absolutely need a big kitchen. I love to cook, and I love hosting even more. I picture a large island where everyone naturally gathers, open shelving with pieces collected over time, warm lighting, and enough space for friends and family to hang out while something’s on the stove. To me, the kitchen is the heart of the home!

It’s interesting because so much of design right now leans toward a very minimalist & simple aesthetic. While I can appreciate the simplicity, it’s not a style I naturally gravitate toward. I’m much more inspired by warmth, character, and spaces that feel layered and personal.

What would you say is your superpower?

My superpower is my ability to genuinely talk to almost anyone. I’m not a huge fan of surface-level small talk. I’d much rather skip straight to something real. I believe in building actual relationships with the people I meet, whether it’s clients, coworkers, or someone new entirely. Once you get me talking, it’s usually hard to stop me, but it comes from a place of curiosity and care. I think being able to make people feel comfortable, heard, and understood is a bit of a superpower.

What are you passionate about outside of work?

As I said, I do have two cats, and I genuinely adore spending time with them. I’m also recently engaged, so wedding planning has definitely taken up a lot of my time lately. On top of that, I’m currently studying for my exams to become a licensed architect, so life feels a little busy, but I promise I have real hobbies too.

I love a good book, especially thrillers or a sappy romance novel. In the winter, if I can make the trip up north, I love to ski. My dad put me on skis at a really young age, and it’s something I’ve stuck with ever since. But summertime is when I truly thrive. My fiancé and I love to fish. You can usually find us surfcasting on Plum Island or Salisbury Reservation, out on our boat cruising down the Merrimack River, or taking it over to Big Island Pond. Being on the water is my favorite way to unwind.

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?

This one is easy: Italy. I’ve been a couple of times, and I would go back again and again if I could. I’m Italian, and my grandparents came to the United States from Italy before my mom was born, so there’s something deeply personal about being there. I also studied abroad there in college, which only deepened my love for the country. The architecture, the food, the pace of life, the way people truly savor everyday moments, it all resonates with me. It’s one of the few places that feels both inspiring and grounding at the same time. If I could make it an annual trip, I absolutely would.
