Detailing the New England Colonial Refresh
Rather than a whole-house remodel, we focused on transforming high-traffic areas of the Colonial – including the kitchen, powder room, guest bathroom, master bathroom, and entry foyer – all maintaining their original footprints. Despite initial delays relating to COVID-19, BLB executed our proven Design-Build process and successfully delivered a project within the originally estimated schedule and budget.
The Kitchen

Like many homes constructed in the ’90s, this kitchen was bursting with light-colored wood, plastic laminate countertops, and a dark granite island top. To start, our crew removed all existing cabinets, countertops, appliances, and fixtures. Once the interior items were removed, the existing window above the sink and sliding door were removed and reframed to accommodate new Marvin Elevate units.
To modernize the kitchen and create the illusion of more space, the homeowner selected light and airy finishes – including: white Shaker-style cabinets and features including
brass knobs and pulls, a spice drawer pullout, custom interior drawer dividers, select glass panels, soft-close doors, a dishwasher panel, and under cabinet lighting. Quartzite countertops were selected for durability and style, as the white quartzite resembles the look of Italian Calacatta marble. Other features in the kitchen include a glossy backsplash running in a herringbone pattern, new stainless steel appliances, and a farmhouse sink.
The Powder + Guest Bathroom
Although the powder room and guest bathroom were smaller in size, they received some of the best transformations of the entire project. Starting in the powder room, BLB’s crew removed and replaced all the plumbing fixtures – fitting the space with a new pedestal sink, toilet, and chrome fixtures. The crew also removed the beige tile floor and prepped the space for new decorative porcelain tile. Dual-toned paint was applied to the walls to finish off the space and beautifully compliment the new tile.
Moving upstairs, the guest bathroom also featured traditional ’90s finishes – maple cabinets, a sliding glass shower door, and earthy tones on the floor and walls.

Following the demo, new 12″ x 24″ porcelain tile running in a bond pattern was installed on the bathroom floor, along with white subway tile applied to the bathtub surround. To replace the original double vanity, a 63″ semi-custom single vanity was installed and topped with LG Viatera quartz. Other features include new plumbing fixtures, chrome hardware, and two stone shelves for additional in-shower storage.
The Master Bathroom
Similar to the kitchen, the original master bath was oozing with ’90s charm – including maple panels surrounding the jacuzzi tub, a maple double vanity, and a fiberglass shower. Our crew began with removing the existing vanity and top, bathtub, shower, toilet, and tile floor and replacing each element with modern fixtures and finishes. 4″ x 12″ porcelain tile resembling Carrara marble was installed in a herringbone pattern on the bathroom floors and were also carried up the walls to achieve a wainscoting design. A new walk-in shower with a custom glass door was designed and fitted with tile floors and surround, along with a curved bench and niche – which spans the entire back wall and includes decorative mosaic banding and a quartz shelf.
