7 Features You Need in Your Next Bathroom
The bathroom. At its core, it needs to be functional, but at the same time, we all want it to feel luxurious. Your bathroom should be more than just a place to shower before work and brush your teeth before bed. It should be a sanctuary, a place to relax and unwind. After all, who wouldn’t want their own at-home spa? There are many ways you can achieve this zen effect in your bathroom. Here are our top features for a practical yet luxurious primary bathroom you’ll never want to leave.
1. Shower Built-Ins
One of our top features is the shower niche. This a perfect example of a bathroom feature that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional. We all have products that live in the shower, so instead of buying a rack to stick on the wall, why not make a dedicated, built-in home for them? Pro tip: If possible, install your niche on the interior wall so that all your toiletries are hidden from view when looking at the shower.
Another excellent shower built-in to add is a bench, especially if you’re remodeling to age in place. Having a bench makes showering safer and more accessible. It allows a person to relax and take their time in the shower without the risk of falling. Plus, a bench can serve as an additional storage space for your bath products.

2. Go Frameless
Want to make your bathroom look like it belongs in a 5-star hotel? Consider a frameless shower enclosure. Adding a frameless shower enclosure to your bathroom will instantly increase the sense of luxury. Frameless shower enclosures offer a sense of openness, making the entire space seem bigger. This sleek design reduces the risk of mold and mildew due to fewer joints, seals, and seams. Plus, they’re also easier to clean!

3. Double (Vanity) or Nothing
The double vanity is another primary bathroom design necessity, especially if you live with a partner. There’s something so satisfying about having your own sink and counter space around it. With a double vanity, you also gain more storage space. Like a single vanity, you can have a double vanity built any size to fit your needs and the room’s dimensions. This one is always worth the ROI.
4. Put Your Makeup On
On a similar note, if you have the space for it, having a sit-down area to put makeup on is another favorite feature. Not only is it relaxing to have your own dedicated makeup space, but a makeup vanity will also help keep you organized and allow you to store all your products in one space. Make sure to add a mirror with integrated and adjustable LED lighting. The adjustable light means that no matter how tall you are, the light will always fall perfectly on you.

5. Behind Closed Doors
While a toilet is necessary in every bathroom, this doesn’t mean it has to be placed in the open for everyone to see. One of our favorite bathroom designs is building a separate water closet in the main bathroom. If you have the space, placing the toilet behind a pocket door is worth its weight in gold. Not only does this hide the unsightly toilet, but it also allows for additional privacy, especially if you’re sharing the space with a significant other.

6. It’s Getting Hot in Here
There’s nothing worse than waking up to a cold New England morning and an even colder bathroom floor. If you are remodeling your bathroom, consider adding radiant heat floors. Nothing says “spa experience” like a warm tile floor. Radiant heating is also far more efficient and more sustainable than forced air. Bonus points if you add a heated towel rack as well! Now that’s a cozy bathroom.

7. Hand Me a Towel
Lastly, while it might not be the first thing that comes to mind when imagining bathroom luxury, having a linen closet or cabinet built in the room is a must. You can never have enough storage, and having all your towels within eyeshot of your shower is incredibly helpful. There’s nothing worse than hopping in the shower and realizing you forgot to have a towel ready. We also suggest adding a hidden hamper in the closet to prevent dirty clothes and towels from piling up. A clean and tidy bathroom is crucial to creating a zen space.
